3v3 Official Rules

updated: 1/28/22

PLAYER REGISTRATION: All players must be listed on their teams’ roster form before the tournament begins. The registration forms must be complete and contain all necessary signatures. Player waiver forms must also be signed by parent or guardian prior to start of play.

ROSTERS:  Maximum of 5 players.   No changes or substitutions to rosters after the start of the team’s first game. Teams may consist of same gender or be coed. Co-ed teams must have at least one female on the field at all times (unless only 1-female is on the roster).  All rosters are final at the start of the team’s first game. Players may only roster "up", no player shall be permitted to play down a division.
EXAMPES:  1. 8th grader who registers on a team with a 9th grade sibling, must play in the Sr. High division.
2. 9th grader with 3 7th grade friends, is not allowed to play in the Jr. High division even though their team is comprised of mostly 7th graders.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 5 is the maximum number of players on a team; three field players at one time. Players may only play on one team in the tournament. There are no goalkeepers in 3v3 soccer. Substitutions may occur at any dead ball situation, players must get referees attention and enter and exit at the half field mark only.

EQUIPMENT: ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR SHIN GUARDS. Any player without shin guards will not be allowed to play. Sneakers and indoor soccer shoes only. No outdoor cleats or turf shoes will be permitted.

FIELD DIMENSIONS: Dimensions will be based on the size of each gymnasium court.

GOAL BOX: Depends on field size. The goal box will be taped off directly in front of the goal. Generally, ten feet wide by eight feet deep but may be adjusted based on gymnasium size. No player may touch the ball within the goal box, however any player may move through the goal box. Any part of the ball or players body on the line is considered in the goal box; the player is an extension of the goal box. An INFRACTION occurs if a defender touches the ball in the goal box; a penalty kick is then awarded to the offensive team. If an offensive player touches the ball within the goal box, a goal kick is awarded to the defensive team. Habitual touches in the goal box may result with a Yellow Card given to the offending party. If the ball comes to a complete stop in the box, regardless of which team touched it last, a goal kick is awarded to the defensive team.

GAME DURATION: For Elementary and Intermediate divisions, the game shall consist of two 10-minute halves separated by a 1-minute halftime, OR the game ends when a team reaches a 10 goal lead. For Junior High & Senior High divisions, the game shall consist of a running 20 minute, continuous play, game clock OR the game ends when a team reaches a 10 goal lead. Stoppage time will only occur for an injury at referees discretion. Pool games tied after regulation play shall end in a tie. Playoff games cannot end tied.

GOAL SCORING: Goals can be scored from anywhere on the offensive half of the field of play. A goal cannot be scored directly from kick-off. For a goal to be awarded during a kickoff, the ball must first be kicked completely off of the halfway line, into the offensive half of the field.

PLAYOFF OVERTIME: OT shall consist of a sudden death overtime period, maximum length of 3-minutes, with a coin toss to decide kick-off direction. The first team to score in overtime is the winner. If the score is still tied after the 3-minutes, the winner is decided by a shootout with the three players on the field at the end of the sudden death period. Overtime penalty kicks are to be taken at the end line rather than at mid-field. A coin flip will decide which team starts the penalty kick round. If the score remains tied after the first round of penalty kicks the same field players will rotate in a sudden death penalty kick format until one team scores.

SCORING (IN POOL PLAY): 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.

FORFEITS: A forfeit is scored as 3-0.

TIEBREAKERS: In pool play, ties between two or more teams will be broken by; 1) head to head results between tied teams; 2) goal difference in pool play; 3) fewest goals against in pool play; 4) goals scored; 5) team shootout with entire rosters.

: In all dead ball situations, defending players must stand 3 yards away from the ball. If the defensive player’s goal area is closer than 3yards, the ball is placed 3yards from the goal area in line with the place of the penalty.

KICK – INS: The ball shall be kicked into play from the sideline/end-line instead of thrown in. All kick-ins, including corner kicks, cannot be higher than the waist.

INDIRECT KICKS: All dead ball kicks (kick-ins, free kicks, kick-offs) are indirect except penalty kicks. GOAL KICKS: Inside the goal box area. KICK OFF: May be taken in any direction.

PENALTY KICKS: Shall be awarded if, in the referee’s opinion, a scoring opportunity was nullified by an infraction. It is a direct kick taken from the center of the midfield line with all other players behind the midfield line. If a goal is not scored, the defense obtains possession with a goal kick. Penalty kicks are not live balls.

PLAYER EJECTION (YELLOW/RED CARD): Referees have the right to sit a player from the game for continual disobedience or as a result of an incident that warrants sending the player off.  Red cards will results in ejection from the tournament. The Tournament Director may eject a player for the rest of the tournament. Teams may still play with 3 on the field.

SPORTSMANSHIP: Players, coaches, and spectators are expected to act in the nature of good sportsmanship at all times. Abuse of the referees or tournament staff will not be tolerated. Any instance of such conduct will disqualify the responsible team and/or spectator from the event.

HIGH BALL RULE: Any ball making contact with the roof or any object hung from ceiling will result in a dead ball restart for the opposing team with the five yard rule.
